How can we help to stop climate change?

Global warming is the biggest environmental threat facing the planet. The Greenland Ice-cap is melting, Mount Everest is shrinking and freak weather events are happening more frequently. Now scientists have reported that in as little as ten years, the point of no return for global warming may be reached, which will lead to massive and unpredictable climate disruption.

We know the world is in trouble so what can we do to help? Saving energy and helping to reduce the harmful emissions of carbon dioxide is vital in the race to halt climate change. You may already use energy efficient light bulbs, recycle and make regular trips to the bottle banks, but how eco-conscious really are you? What do you do to help save the environment? Do you feel the government is doing enough? Please join in the debate on the community board. We look forward to hearing your views.

Energy-saving ideas

  • Save energy by turning off the lights - Lynne Franks

  • Save trees by becoming conscious of paper waste. Sign up for paperless billing and recycle - Tara

  • Walk rather than drive. It’s good for your health as well as for the environment - Nina

  • Try and use eco-friendly household cleaning products – Norma

  • Recycle your cans. One aluminium can provides enough energy to power a television for three hours – Scarlett W

  • Switch your electricity supplier to a green energy supplier such as Green Energy - Tania

  • Badger your local council into introducing a door to door recycling scheme - local councils are now obliged to recycle at least two types of recyclable waste such as glass and newspapers - Tania

  • Buy organic fruit, vegetables, meat and clothing. By choosing products that use fewer pesticides in the production, reduces the amount of oil we use. Most pesticides are derived from the oil industry - Tania

  • Turn off your television. Leaving your television on stand-by uses almost as much power as when it’s fully on. I think it's worth getting up and using my own energy to actually switch the television on and off rather than waste more energy! - Ruth

Please post your solutions to the community board and we’ll add them to the list.
